Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said on Saturday that it has recalled the visas of all South Sudan passport holders because the country’s transitional government refused to “timely” citizens deported by Trump’s administration.
Mr Rubio also said in a social media position that it would “limit any further issuance of south -Sudan’s entry”, accusing the “failure of the South Sudan transitional government” to accept repatriation. In a statement issued through the Foreign Ministry, Mr Rubio said: “We will be ready to review these actions when South Sudan is in full cooperation.”
Mr Rubio’s action is similar to that announced by President Trump at the end of January, when he threatened Colombian officials by revoking their visas and invoices to the country’s exports because they refused to accept US military flights with Colombians. In this case, Colombia quickly overturned its decision.
Mr Rubio’s decision to approve such a sweeping action on the visas of the travelers and immigrants of South Sudan is a further indication of the intense focus of Trump’s administration in an effort to displace as many foreign citizens as possible from the United States as soon as possible.
Some of the potential deportants have filed lawsuits against Trump’s administration and several judges have issued temporary restrictions as a result.
South Sudanese ambassador to Britain, Nickson Deng, said Sunday that his government had not yet received an official announcement from the US government on the matter and will not comment further.
Lucas Guttentag, a former official at the Ministry of Justice during Biden’s administration, called on “another example of conviction based on the nationality and upgrading of the lives of innocents and laws that have visa holders instead of participating in substantial diplomacy”.
Trump’s administration has tried to carry out a massive deportation campaign through large businesses in the United States in recent months. Mr Rubio argued that he had the right to revoke the considerations of some of these potential liberation, now in detention centers because they undermine US foreign policy.
Several prominent prisoners participated in campus protests or wrote essays against the Israeli war in Gaza and American arms support for it.
Mr Rubio said on March 27 that he had perhaps recalling 300 or more visas and is signing papers daily to displace more people. The most important alien citizen that their visa had recalled was perhaps Arias Sánchez, former Costa Rica president and the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Mr Arias said on Tuesday that the US government informed him that the visa in his passport had been suspended, weeks after writing in the social media that Mr Trump behaved as if he were a “Roman Emperor”.
The US government has long addressed issues with countries receiving people who will be deported by the Ministry of Homeland Security – either due to the lack of diplomatic links or problems with the appropriate travel documents. During the first administration of Trump, US officials imposed visa sanctions on various countries that considered non -cooperative. These sanctions have influenced some people who are already looking for visas abroad.
In 2023, the Biden administration offered protection from the expulsion of immigrants from South Sudan through a program known as a temporary protected regime. The decision was made, officials then said due to violence in the country. These protections run until May.
