To my right, two regular 70-something in the York Exhibition Pub of England gave me questions about American politics, they teach me how to recognize a new beer pink (he should leave a foam path to the glass) and I was invited next to me for A curry in their favorite Indian restaurant.
To my left, a middle-aged couple visiting from Manchester recommended the pub’s burger and acknowledged the golf-golf-golf-golf-golf golf-golf-as “Pub Golf”, a drinking contest that includes 18 pubs. .
This easy companionship was the by -product of the control in a re -accommodation pub. A pub’s accommodation offers the convenience of the hotel hotel and the boat with a bar that follows between the local community.
They were shown by everything, from inflation to remote work standards, many pub owners say that renting spaces is increasingly important for their survival. The British Union of Beer and pub estimates that there are about 45,000 pubs across Britain, below about 2,000 pubs since 2019.
The electronic platform I used to find the exhibition, to stay in a pub, to list over 1,600 accommodation facilities across the UK, which can be sought by facilities, activities and price (on average 100 to 300 lbs per Night or about $ 125 to $ 375, usually, including breakfast and taxes).
Sophie Braybrooke, the CEO of staying in a pub, describes a pub as more social than an Airbnb and less island than a traditional bed and breakfast, with an authentic British feel.
“It’s easy to walk in a pub, someone’s pet dog, and you are suddenly in a conversation,” Ms. Brayblock.
And in Britain, where many pubs with rooms have been hundreds of years, the institution usually comes with a story – sometimes a ghost story.
A long story
Although it is unknown how many pubs offer accommodation, they have a long history.
In 1577, according to Paul Jennings, a British historian and author of “The Local: A History of the English Pub horses taverns, dedicated to wine service.
“Alehouses were daily consumption, ordinary men and women went,” said Jennings. “The usual Alehouse evolved into” Public Alehouse “, then” Public House “, then” pub “»
By 1870, Britain had over 118,000 pubs, according to Mr Jennings. Historically, pubs often provided accommodation for people who could not afford. Over the years, the line that divides the inns and pubs has been blurry and many pubs have increased. (Oak & Poppy in the Northwestern Hampstee area of London, for example, offers two elegant rooms recently invoiced at £ 400 at night.)
Source for Rural Stays
In 2013, Paul Nunny, who worked in Brewing and set up a certification of pubs for pubs called the Cask Marque, took place travelers who could enjoy the Pub Stays had no easy way to find rooms.
He founded the stay in a pub as a list, which was expanded with a strong website and a diligent pub option in 2019, just before the pandemic freezing and the scalable pubs.
Staying in a pub is not the only resource. The English Inns website includes PUB stays, and the good hotel guide, which revises hotels, maintains a list of “Editor’s Choice” with accommodation with accommodation.
There are also hotel groups such as Fuller’s, which has 31 pubs with rooms all over England. Brewery Young has 40 pubs with rooms in London and Southeast England.
Some entries are overlapped by accommodation in a pub, which operates on the basis of a member, but has many pubs selected for geographical diversity or recognition.
A stay in a pubic member, the bell at Ticehurst in eastern Sussex, about two hours by car south of London, dates back to the 16th century and houses seven bedrooms (from £ 118). The peculiar decoration of the pub includes bowling hats used as lamps.
“We are quite remote,” said Rae Barnes, Bell’s host manager in Ticehurst. “People looking for something familiar and friendly will go to stay in a pub if they are not familiar with the area.”
Lower beds, sloping floors
They are not familiar with much of the country, I used the stay in a pub to close the exhibition and the SWAN Hotel on the Thames River in States, about 15 minutes by taxi from London’s Heathrow Airport and a convenient Windsor Castle.
The swan is named for the delivery of Swan Upping, historically an inventory of the birds carried out by the royal family in a Thames stretch. Since the 12th century, the monarchy has reserved the right to all muted swans – once a source of food, now a protected species – on the wild leaves of Britain. The ritual increase, which takes place annually in July, serves as a health inspection.
Built in the 16th century, the three -storey lime pub, run by the Fuller Hotel Group, offers a historic environment for 15 refurbished rooms on the upper floor. My comfortable room (£ 179), which had a bed, an espresso machine, a Bluetooth speaker and a furnished balcony overlooking the river, deposited at its age only on its sloping floor.
After a late in the afternoon on foot along the river, I entered local fans in the pub on the ground for a football television match and a Fuller’s Frontier Lager pint (Fuller sold her business in Asahi, which continues to be prepared with Fuller’s name, in 2019).
When a large group of office colleagues gathered the bar, making it impossible to keep talking to the dog owner next to me, I moved to the neighboring dining room for a Tarragon risotto relief meal (£ 16.50) as I watched Dim Light.
Although I left too early for the full English breakfast (there is also a plant-based version) included in the interest rates of my room, I appreciate the one-stop call of Swan as a community magnet, a quality restaurant and a boutique hotel in an atmospheric address.
Remains with a story
In York, a rejection of the Roman walls typing the medieval center of the city of northern England, the story of the exhibition begins in 1702 when it was built as a private home. The rear garden beer and parking hosted the stables and squares of the servants.
It was a pub for many years ago Shuni Davies and her husband, Danny, bought it more than 40 years ago. They add the beer garden and food and gradually renovated two upper floors as their living rooms plus six rooms for rent.
“The two floors were abandoned without windows and full of pigeons,” Ms Davies said.
Now the rooms are full of framed souvenirs, including a leaflet that records “rules of Inn” since 1786.
Tidenized, comfortable and soundproofed by the pub below, my room, named Victoria (£ 115), had a bed accumulated with pillows. In the morning, a generous free breakfast – I chose the eggs with the toast avocado – served at the Juts Conservatory in the beer garden.
I never felt anything spectacular, though Ms. Davies later told me that a former visitor had once got out of the shower to find all the paintings on the walls of the hostel that went down and leaning in bed.
“He ran down with a towel around his waist,” he said, adding that he was never destroyed in the exhibition. “It has a warm and friendly feeling. Even ghosts are friendly. ”
